GW-KUBS Exchange Program Experience Letter
About me: My name is Jessy, a senior at KUBS, concentrated in accounting and finance. I participated in the program in the 2019 fall semester when I attended my first semester for the last year. After completion of academic study, I did an accountant internship at a CPA firm near the DC metro area. Overall, I had a great time at GWU, and there are more than a letter to describe and state. Please feel free to ask any flavour at ijihoon7@gwmail.gwu.edu.
School Introduction: GWU is located at Wahiongton, DC, a big city full of opportunities. To be detailed, World Bank, White House, and so many headquarters are located here. It leads to more job opportunities, and provide a more wider view to see the world. It is also safe and clean. With Metro subway, life will be convenient as well. I like the weather on the east coast as well. Basing the those reasons, I picked GWU. When talking about GW School of Business (hereby GWSB), it is commonly agreed that it’s good at Real Estate, International Business.
Then I will introduce several systems GW students use during school. First, https://passport.gwu.edu/ is what you will use before starting semester, all needed documents are shown as checking boxes here. Second, https://my.gwu.edu/ is your portal, all school sources are listed here. Third, https://banweb.gwu.edu/ is where you can see your courses registration, your account bill, and your private information collected, such as your address and so on.
Class Registration Academic study: I registered 7 courses, crossing Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, Computer Science departments, total 17 credits, which is max for one semester. The courses are Advanced Financial Management, Applied Financial Securities Analysis: Real Estate, Advanced Accounting, Introduction to Programming with Python, Introduction to Web Software Development, Career Management Strategy, Fundamental of Excel I. My thesis is learning advanced finance and accounting courses, get to know US stock market through securities analysis, at the same time developing and practicing my programming skills through excel and computer languages. One more class, career management strategy (Investment Banking section) is for exploring more about career path and work culture in US.
Moreover, https://my.gwu.edu/mod/pws/ is the website used to searching for classes, and then you need to send the form to Exchange Team, they will help you to register. This process happened before you go to GWU campus. If you already arrive at GWU, you may can register by yourself by visiting class-register office at Marvin center. But be noticed, popular class are popular! So do as soon as possible to grab yours! Besides, I would like to introduce a website https://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ for checking course reviews, and help to choose the ideal and suitable one. Blackboard is a mainly used tool for studying over the semester.
학회&동아리: I was membered in 학회 in KUBS, and thus at the beginning of fall semester, I attended info session for certain clubs, to seek for an ideal 학회 to promote myself. Must to say that GWSB has so many consulting associations, servicing for start-ups, or NGO near DC. Most of those actually running internationally, which means the companies or organizations they helped also had some branches in the world, like Africa. Besides consulting, GWSB has so many coaching organizations, which are very helpful as well. Coaches who are professional in the industry, they will share their insights and create a network and community for all members. For your reference, https://gwu.campuslabs.com/engage/organizations is an official website listing all 학회&동아리 offering at GWU. I will also list a few more of my recommendations, which are Finance and Investments Club (fic@gwu.edu), Women in Finance Alliance WIFA (wifa.gw@gmail.com). You are more than welcome to email them directly to introduce yourself. This picture is for one email from Finance and Investment Club, where they inform an virtual talks with alumni who are Investment Bankers.
GWU ISO: One office I must mention is GWU international student office, which is commonly called ISO. As an international student, ISO will help you a lot! GWU ISO is extremely friendly, in time and on time to help international students. You should always firstly ask ISO for help when you meet any difficulties!
Read their website https://internationalservices.gwu.edu/, visit drop-in quick start advising, or make an appointment through https://internationalservices.gwu.edu/student-advising-appointments, send a quick message to iso@gwu.edu, there are so many ways they can be reached out! They also hold lots of informative events and workshops. for example the following picture. All can be searched at their website https://internationalservices.gwu.edu/events-programs.
Internship (accountant filed): Normally students can utilize the school career center, career fair, and campus recruitment for seeking a job, so i will not explain those, but rather to introduce my job-seeking experiences. I started to seek an accounting internship in Nov, 2019. Indeed, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Handshake are useful websites. For my experience, I used Indeed to seek for job opportunities, and then use LinkedIn to network with employees who are working in my target company. It is said that normally aluminum is more likely to respond to you and give you advice, help or even referral. Next, I use Glassdoor to search for reviews and comments from interviewees, to learn about the company's culture and what kind of personality they are looking for. By applying to middle-sized and small CPA firms, accountant positions at fortune 500 companies, and interviewing with 5 accounting firms, I finally got two offers for a winter internship, and I accept one, then performed as an accountant intern during last winter. I found fun in exploring GAAP accounting rules and tax returns filing.
Living out of campus: Because of hoping for more freedom and flexibility, I did not apply for campus living, rather choose to rent an apartment in the DC Metro area. It is located at Arlington, Virginia, near crystal city station, costing around 20 minutes to head to GWU campus by taking subway Blue line. Rent payment at this area normally is 1,000-1500 dollars per month. This area has quite rich suburbs, and it is really safe, quiet, peaceful. Most importantly, it is really convenient, because it is surrounded by Costco (wholesale), Wholefood for daily food ingredients purchase, and 7-11 convenience store. By the way, https://living.gwu.edu/exchange-student-housing-application is for on-campus housing application.
Life in America & Travelling: I enjoyed living in America pretty much, and I like travelling. I travelled to San Francisco in Aug, 2019 when it was before the semester, and Seattle several times during the semester, also spent New Year of 2020 at Chicago with friends, and great time for Miami at spring. Except flying travels, because I took the Virginia driver license test because it is easier and the state DMV service is pretty much good, with a driver license, I purchased a car and did a road trip from DC to South, passing North Carolina, then South Carolina, Georgia, Louisiana, finally destined to Texas. In east area, public traffic are well developed, taking trains to Boston, New York from DC are super easy.

Also, you can choose your own insurance company, and use your insurance policy to apply for waive the original automatically enrolled on by university. But make sure your own insurance policy meets the school requirement, otherwise can not be waived.
(2)Library: A lots of information can be found at https://library.gwu.edu/. Study room reservations, subject databases, workshops are three services I like to use. GW Library holds workshops every week, such as SAS, Python, and so on. In a word, library is creating a great community for students to self-learn new skills. Often visit library is highly recommended.
