From building a team to decision-making, special lecture from CSO Jihun Kang for start-ups   The lecture of ‘Entrepreneurship Academy Lecture Series’, hosted by KUBS Startup Station (Director=Hojung Shin), was held at The Stage, the second floor of Business School Main Hall on September 27th (Tue). CANLAB CSO Jihun Kang gave the lecture on the theme of “Essense for Start-up Teams”.   CSO Jihun Kang started his lecture by sharing how he began start-ups by frankly speaking his stories from his childhood to his undergraduate days. Through the IMF crisis, he experienced that there are no more stable workplaces to work for his whole life. After that CSO Kang decided to start up a game company that he was interested in, while he was running a website business and studying at the same time since he was an undergraduate.    Furthermore, the lecture was followed by CSO Kang’s advice on start-up team building. He said since the 2000s when there was a change of perception towards start-ups, people started to build a start-up team earlier than before.  Also, he said that even though start-ups by undergraduates had increased, it is not easy to make a good team.    Especially, CSO Kang emphasized the importance of motivation and expertise. He said the key to a start-up is a team with vision getting professionalism. Also, it is important to make a team with colleagues who can build motivation and expertise on their own, along with a long-term perspective.   He also mentioned the importance of strategic thinking in marketing and vision. Start-ups at an early stage tend to underestimate the market of the field, but the market should be big enough and it has to be verified with a big vision. He emphasized start-ups should have a big vision but when planning strategy at an early stage to build your profile, you have to focus on making keywords that would make your business No. 1 in the field.    Furthermore, CSO Kang also explained about running a team after building a team. Managing team reputation is very important to CEO in running a team and prudent recruitment and dismissal procedures would bring talented people. He also commented that debate itself is needed with lots of opinions, but you should meet a consensus when deciding on strategy and important goals for the team.   After the lecture, participants had a Q&A session asking about each phase of start-ups and the services that CANLAB KOREA provides to start-up teams. The lecture successfully ended after sharing practical and key advice to pre-startups and start-ups on making and running a team ‘CANLAB KOREA’ is a start-up founded for business in Korea, under Singapore service software (SaaS) start-up CANLAB that provides community and DAO solution. It provides NoCord solution CAN(Community Alliance Network, hereinbelow CAN) which can build mobile and web services based on community.

The 15th Carrer Week held…Sharing ‘TikTok’ strategy for sustainable business management   The 15th Career Week, hosted by KUBS (Dean=Johngseok Bae) Career Development center, was successfully held on 28th September. Career Week is an employment competency enhancement program, that invites experts from diverse fields of work and provides students with career mentoring. This event, held at the  SUPEX HALL of LG-POSCO Building 4th floor, consisted of two sessions: employment lectures on the first and corporation lectures on the second.     In the first session, the lecture was given by J&P HR Consulting Vice President Keunbae Choi. The lecture was about 90 minutes from 11:30 AM on the theme of . Vice President Choi emphasized that “An interview is a communication, not a quiz” and “Interviewee should get the gist of the interviewer and give a simple and clear answer”. Also, he highlighted some of the points that applicants may overlook during the application and interview. Furthermore, he covered recent recruitment trends such as △Expansion on non-face-to-face/digital recruitment △Generalization of occasional recruitment △Preference for work-ready talents.     After the first session, Global SNS platform ‘TikTok’ Executive in charge of External Affairs-Safety, Erich Anderson gave a corporation lecture for the second session from 14:00 PM. The lecture continued for about an hour in English on the theme of on and . Through examples of CSR and promotion by TikTok, it was an opportunity to look at how social activities, which aim for the local community and the youth, can affect sustainable management.    KUBS Career Development Center hosts various programs such as career seminars or special lectures based on students’ demands and provides many opportunities for employment and career.  

[Special lectures for Entrepreneurship Academy Lecture on Demand]   Start-up on Campus changed my life…Primer Partner Taejun No special lecture completed   Special lectures for ‘Entrepreneurship Academy Lecture on Demand’, hosted by KUBS Startup Station (Director=Hojung Shin), were held on September 13th (Tue). The lecture was given by Partner Taejun No who had experience in starting up an IT company, Daangnmarket New Business Development team leader, and partner of early start-up investing company ‘Primer’. In the lecture, he gave practical advice on how to prove the chances of success of an early start-up and to improve on it.       Partner Taejun No mentioned that ‘retention’ is when customers use the service again and the very point that decides the exponential growth that start-ups should aim at. He emphasized the importance of retention saying that if the company has good retention, the company has the possibility to become a unicorn company even if the company is small right now. Furthermore, he said the way to enable exponential growth is by increasing the retention rate by improving service quality and making a service that customers want to use again.   Furthermore, he explained early verification methods to enhance the retention with figures. Partner No said it is important to try many experimental hypotheses quickly as possible and review its product-market fir based on revisit. Also, market capitalization, costs to secure customers, and chances of profit system improvement should also be reviewed along with retention.   After the lecture, participants had Q&A sessions on various kinds from the practical advice in the start-up process to attitudes for student entrepreneurs. For questions on how to assess retention on one-time event service, Partner No advised “For services that are difficult to use every day like tourism, they should aim for overwhelming occupation in the field, and change the retention period to by seasons, or vacations.”. He advised students who are still thinking of start-ups that there had been lots of opportunities that he would not have had without start-ups, and start-ups on campus changed his life.     ‘Entrepreneurship Academy Lecture on Demand’ successfully ended after the lecturer shared his realistic advice for undergraduate entrepreneurs and his honest experience with students who are thinking of start-ups.

“Hope to become a leader that our society needs”…Entrance Ceremony of the 94th AMP Class Held   The entrance ceremony of the 94th KUBS (Dean=Johngseok Bae) Advanced Management Program (hereinbelow AMP) Class was held at the SUPEX HALL of LG-POSCO Building on September 19th (Mon). KUBS Dean Johngseok Bae, KUBS Associate Dean Yongkeun Yoo, AMP Head Professor Bokyung Bae, and students of the 94th AMP class attended the event, while KUBS Executive Manager Jongkeun Kim moderated the ceremony. Especially, 9 Alumni executives including AMP Alumni Association President Moonchan Kim, Chief Vice President Dongseok Lee, and Vice President for Administration and Finance Gijun Lee also graced the event with their presence.      The ceremony started with opening remarks from KUBS Dean Johngseok Bae. He said, “What our society desperately needs is a true leader in this rapidly changing business environment” and “You are now in the progress to become leaders with high resilience despite challenges and failure.   Furthermore, AMP Alumni Association President Moonchan Kim spoke words of congratulations. Moonchan Kim, the 21st president of the Alumni Association, mentioned previous Alumni Association Presidents and emphasized the importance of the Alumni association network. He also welcomed the 94th Class by saying, “You must have lots of worries until AMP admission, but you made a good decision”. The ceremony was followed by a marimba play on and as a congratulatory performance by Pulse Percussion.      The entrance ceremony ended after singing the school song and taking commemorative photos. On this day, 43 students have become new members of Korea University and they strengthened their enthusiasm for study and better business management.

『Korea University MBA 30-30 Alma School Development Committee』 Appreciation Dinner Successfully Held     『Korea University MBA 30-30 Alma School Development Committee』 appreciation dinner was held at the Ahn Young Il Hall of LG-POSCO Building on the 15th evening.   『Korea University MBA 30-30 Alma School Development Committee』 was established on May 5th to achieve the goal of Asia’s No. 1 and Global No.30 Business School by 2030. The committee raised donations of about 320 million won in a short time for the KU MBA promotion.     The ceremony was moderated by KUBS Associate Dean Yongkeun Yoo and started with an introduction of attendees and guests, followed by applause with welcome and appreciation.    To begin the ceremony, KUBS Dean Johngseok Bae had a welcoming speech. The welcoming speech began with a brief mention of the significance of 『Korea University MBA 30-30 Alma School Development Committee』. The speech ended after expressing appreciation for the activities and help from the Committee.    Next, the ceremony was followed by a congratulatory speech by committee Chairman Hyunsik Chung with applause. Chairman Chung, who had attended despite his poor health, thanked the committee members saying that there would be no doubt of achieving the goal of 30-30.  After that, a letter of appreciation and appreciation plaque were presented to the committee. They were presented by Dean Bae himself, showing appreciation for the unsparing support from the committee. The committee members, started with Chairman Chung, were presented letters of appreciation with appreciation plaques and took photos respectively.        Furthermore, there had been a progress report on the committee’s activities. Associate Dean Yoo began the presentation by introducing the status of the committee goal and KU MBA. He emphasized that we are not far from achieving the goal, considering the achievement that KUBS made in 2021. He briefly proposed four 30-30 project key tasks: inviting scholars from oversea, education innovation, several measures to activate MBA and development in historical & artistic nature. Also, he described the status of specific plans on setting up MBA Lounge, introducing MBA Friday Happy Hour, and setting up the artwork. The report ended after mentioning privileges from Korea University for donators. After the progress report, group photos and performance of Seungsu Kim and Pyunggang Ahn from the marimba play group ‘Pulse Percussion’ had taken place.   After the short performance had lightened the mood, the dinner started with a toast from Chairman Chung. Chairman Chung told how proud he feels about this committee meeting that connects seniors-juniors, and started the dinner with a toast saying, “For KU MBA”.     The dinner ended in a pleasant mood after talking freely and asking after each other between continuous toasts.

Sudang Digital Library renovated into Creative Learning Center     Sudang Digital Library, located on the 3rd floor LG-POSCO Building, has been newly remodeled to ‘Sudang Creative Learning Center” (hereinbelow Sudang CLC). Sudang Creative Learning Center reflects the trend on Digital Transformation (hereinbelow DT) and seeks for space that enables DB search and free discussion to solve DT problems in business world.    We have faced a transition to problem-based learning (PBL), one of the many changes from the COVID-19 Pandemic. Also, there had been concerns that the previous Sudang Digital Library does not reflect the recent trend considering its storage of paperbook and serials form. Therefore, KUBS remodeled Sudang Digital Library as part of the renovation business throughout overall education and research. The concepts of remodeling are ‘Challenge and creation, Synergy through cooperation and Contribution to common kind’.   Sudang CLC consists of two LABs and a lounge. First, CLC lounge is designed to be a rest area to enable students to think up an idea in a comfortable environment. Students can access databases that were provided on the previous Sudang Digital Library with 6 PCs in the lounge. 3 PCs among them have databases from △Eikon&Datastream (Financial statements and Index for worldwide companies) △ SDC Platinum (Stocks and M&A information for worldwide companies) △Bloomberg (Stock, bonds, derivative market information), to support research activities. Sudang CLC lounge is open from 9 AM to 5 PM during the semester.   CLC LAB is modeled after “PBL Classroom” in KU SK-Future Building. PBL classroom provides a high-quality classroom environment hardware-wise, overcoming the limits of a one-way teaching environment from the lecturer. This cutting-edge hybrid classroom enables both lecturer and students to conduct high-quality problem-solving and cooperative learning, especially when dealing with non-structured subjects.   CLC LAB was designed for debate class based on group seating for PBL study, with cameras and a recording system for student activities, a stereo system, an 86-inch movable TV monitor and a wireless link system. Each table has a PC connected to a TV monitor so that each group can share their PC monitor to the TV and vice versa. Therefore, it is now possible to share thoughts with worldwide businessmen and gain insight by discussing many pending issues regardless of space constraints.   Sudang Digital Library was founded in 2005 to commemorate Mr. Sudang Yeonsu Kim thanks to Sanghong Kim, an alumnus of Korea University. The library stored business paperbooks, serials form, and databases to support research for the faculty and used to be a study place for students. The paperbooks and serials form stored in the previous Sudang Digital Library were moved to KU Main Library Collection Maintenance & Learning Services Department Branch.
