"Our Cheers Will Become Legends"… Soccer, the Drama of a Reversal

On the second day of the 2023 regular competition, the final soccer match ignited the stadium with the passion of students in red attire and their fellow alumni, coloring the bleachers in bright red from early morning. Earlier, the university had secured a victory against Yonsei University in rugby, leaving the overall record at 2 wins and 2 losses. For the soccer match, the university's members had no choice but to come together and support wholeheartedly.

The moment of truth for the overall championship arrived as the soccer match between Korea University and Yonsei University kicked off. In the 38th minute of the first half, during a corner kick situation, the ball was passed to Korea University's defender Yong-seung Kwon (Physical Education '22) after Yonsei University's goalkeeper Kang-seo Choi (Yonsei University '23) failed. However, Yonsei University's player Hyun-do Jang (Yonsei University '22) committed a handball foul, resulting in his expulsion and a penalty kick opportunity for Korea University. In a tense moment, Ji-ho Lee (Physical Education '21) successfully scored the penalty kick, and the enthusiasm of the supporters escalated with resounding cheers.

With numerical superiority and meticulous preparation, Korea University continuously pressured Yonsei University's goal in the second half by introducing various attacking players. Ultimately, with the multi-goal of Kyung-min Yoo (Physical Education ‘21), the Korea University soccer team secured a 3-0 victory over Yonsei University, claiming a comeback win with a final score of 3-2 in the regular competition.

After the hard-fought battle, students showered the soccer team with respect and congratulatory applause, calling out the names of the players immediately after the match. The players responded with smiles filled with pride and gratitude. Notably, this regular Korea-Yonsei University competition included members from diverse age groups and ethnic backgrounds. For foreign students experiencing the fervent cheering culture of South Korea, the event was even more unique. Maxime, a student enrolled in the Global MBA program, remarked, "The soccer match was truly amazing. I've never experienced such passionate cheering in my life, and it was really impressive."
