“It is great to have a lot of opportunities to have contact with world-renowned masters.”

Dr. Hyoungjin Lee (International Business Major, Assistant Professor = Changhwa Chung), who obtained a doctorate from KUBS, was appointed as a professor of Kookmin University Business School(hereinafter KIBS). We listened to the story of Dr.Lee’s master's and doctorate life and appointment at Business School.

Q. Please introduce yourself first.

I received a master's degree and a doctorate degree as an International Business major under the guidance of Professor Changhwa Chung at Korea University Business School. I obtained a doctorate in February of 2021 and was appointed to the KIBS department of Kookmin University in September of the same year, and I am currently adapting to a new environment.

 Q. There must have been various career options after graduation, and I wonder how you chose to become an educator.

I dreamed of becoming an educator by watching my father who is a professor and Professor Changhwa Chung. First of all, I was very attracted to a career as a professor in that I could take the initiative in my field of interest and share the knowledge gained through this process with students. Through undergraduate lectures and research conducted with professors and various during the PhD course, I was able to confirm that the path of the professor fits my aptitude well.

Q. Please tell me what you liked about your master's and doctorate courses at KUBS and what kind of help you received from the school.
I received a lot of help not only from professors of International Business branch but also from professors of other departments of KUBS, but what I remember most is that they gave me a chance to contact world-class scholars and their research. Through a seminar held at Korea University Business School, the experience of listening to and communicating with people such as Professor Changhoon Oh, Professor Caroline Flammer, Professor Tima Bansal, and Professor Maggie Zhou was a great nourishment in the process of conducting and presenting my own research. In addition, it was a valuable experience that professors in the Department of International Business allowed Ph.D. students to attend the Job Talk. 

 Q. What was the difficult part of your master's and doctorate courses and how did you overcome them?
I had growing pains, such as the frustration I felt while writing my first paper and the frustration I felt when my paper was rejected after R&R. My colleagues in the department who spent a lot of time with me were very helpful to me. I think I gained strength by eating delicious food and sharing thoughts with my colleagues who understand each other's situation better than anyone else.

Q. I wonder what kind of research you have done during your master's and doctorate courses, and the kind of research you plan to continue.
We are currently working on how multinational corporations, facing Exogenous Shocks such as political conflicts and pandemic, react and how global supply chains should be reorganized to overcome this crisis. In the future, I would like to conduct research related to 'Cultural and Creative Industry', which is my field of interest.
