KUBS Freshmen Orientation held

A Freshmen Orientation (OT) was held for incoming graduate school students of KUBS on February 15^th (Tue). The orientation was led by KUBS Associate Dean Joon Ho Hwang, and was held in the order of △Introduction to KUBS △Curriculum △Academic Calendar △Registration △Important announcements. Students participated via Zoom, an online platform.

During the first section of the orientation, students were introduced to the organizational chart of KUBS, its internal structure, and a brief introduction of each major. The curriculum section was about school regulations related to MS/PhD and integrated MS/PhD programs. The credit requirement for graduating the MS program has been reduced from 30 credits to 27 credits, starting from students who commenced in 2022 Spring. Associate Dean Professor Hwang emphasized that “this measure is to reduce the pressure from lectures and to help students spend more time on their research.” The credit requirement for graduating PhD program has also been reduced by 3 credits to 33 credits or more, and requirements regarding △Basic courses △Major △Research guidance △Courses designated by academic advisors. The credit requirement for integrated MS/PhD program has also been reduced from 54 credits to 51 credits.

After a brief introduction to the academic calendar, explanations on △Course registration △Applying and changing academic advisors △Courses designated by academic advisors followed. Regarding registration, the presentation explained about △Comprehensive exam △Foreign language test △Requirements for submitting a request for a thesis examination (MS) △ Requirements for submitting a thesis (Integrated MS/PhD) △Period for registration changes △Domestic exchange student programs.

For important announcements, △TA scholarship △Research grants △Research funds for international symposiums △KUBS homepage was explained to the students. TA scholarships are available for a maximum of 4 occasions during a two-year period of MS/PhD program, and integrated MS/PhD students can access it for a maximum of 8 occasions. Details regarding this issue can be found in ‘Forms’ on the KUBS homepage. Research grants are provided when a paper is publicized in either SK Journal or IBRE Journal. Research funds for presenting in international symposiums are limited to a maximum of two million KRW when a student presents at a prestigious international symposium selected by each major.

Lastly, Graduate Student President Lee Jung Woo reported the activities of the student council during the last two years and introduced future academic/policy plans.

KUBS Associate Dean Joon Ho Hwang concluded the OT by saying, “I hope you contact me any time if you have anything you need to consult about, whether it be academic or personal matters. Congratulations on your admission and I hope to see all of you on campus.”
