Interview on new Leadership Team

[Interview] Interview on new Leadership Team “Will help KUBS members to focus on their roles on their positions” Seungwoo Kwon, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs “Will I be able to do it well?” I was concerned first after taking this position with lots of work on KUBS. After a month on the office, I was able to get a better undstanding on the work that I should give more importance on. I would like to realize what I have been thinking of better organization through my teaching on ‘BUSINESS NEGOTIATION’ and ‘ORGANIZATION BEHAVIOR’. The role of associate dean for academic affairs is to help KUBS members at their own positions. My job is to support classes and registeration for undergraduates, boost morale for the faculty and support study along with classess for KUBS professors. I was in Academic Director for ESG AMP course and began my current position from November 1st. To put it simply, ESG management is a sustainable business. Our KUBS should seek for sustainable development as an educational organization. Development based on sacrifice from professors and faculty would unable to sustain long. Both professors and faculty should be happy to support students and carry on long sustainable development of KUBS. I would like to make heartwarming and growing community based on consideration for others which is tradition of Korea University. Please feel free to contact me if students, faculty or professors have anything to talk about or ideas to be more happy. “Will try our best to make changes essential for KUBS” Woochan Kim, Associate Dean for Research I have one year of experience in Graduate School administration and accounting when I was appointed to associate professor 6 years ago. But I don’t think the past experience would always be my advantage because we can make mistakes without a feeling of tension. I try to work as if I am doing a completely new job. I am tasked with study and Graduate School administration this time. I will try my best to make changes KUBS needs, not to be buried with mundane works. To begin with, I will listen to the voices of professors and graduate students. Especially I am planning to have meetings several times with graduate students during the upcoming winter vacation. For study administration, I will fully accept many ways to support research expenses which are discussed in the research committee from early this year, so that expenses would not be a constraint for research. Also, the research committee will update the list of SK/IBRE international academic journals in the following year. In my personal opinion, we have to make some realistic modifications to the SK list. We will give every administrative support available upon request from the research committee. The most important task KUBS faces regarding graduate school is to get excellent results on BK21 interim review next spring and secure an annual 800 million won national subsidy until the year 2027. We have prepared well for the last two and a half years and the only thing left is to fully put our achievement on the report. We ask for active cooperation from professors and graduate students who participate. “Hoping to build KUBS that can contribute to nation and society” Kwanghyun Kim, Associate Dean for Planning I will try my best to fully follow the direction of KUBS development planned by the previous faculty, and help Dean to make it more constructive while operating the biggest and best business school in Korea. I am tasked with allocating and managing KUBS resources according to goals and strategies as associate dean. To be more specific, tasks include △ Budget and accounting △ International Affairs (Accreditation including AACSB and EQUIS, international exchange, exchange student, overseas internship and etc) △Carrer Hub Management △Startup station support, and △LINC business. We will focus on its role to provide financial support KUBS main business and manage efficient use of resources. Also, we will try our best to keep AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) and EQUIS (EFMD Quality Improvement System) worldwide accreditation on the excellence of KUBS faculty, curriculum, and educational environment. At the same time, we will seek international exchange development in quality beyond quantity. Lastly, we will help students through career lab by exploring diverse career paths along with experience and work capabilities. Also, we will provide diverse and active support for students to realize entrepreneurship through Startup Station. We are now having a hard time communicating and exchanging between KUBS members due to the recent economic condition along with COVID-19. Despite these hardships, all students, faculty, and alumni must work together to give energy to the community. One of the biggest strong points of KUBS is that we appreciate various personalities and respect different opinions but can be together for common goals. We hope KUBS become a forge and birthplace to educate future talent who can contribute to the nation and society through new challenge based on these strengths. “Will try our best to strengthen the role of KUBS in the world” Janghyuk Lee, Associate Dean A lot of responsibilities on my shoulders. I didn’t expect to take this position and was concerned but it seems I am enjoying this work after the first month. Also, this made me thrilled to take a great opportunity to give my opinion directly as associate dean. The term is until August 31st, 2024. Until now there has been a new dean appointed in the middle of the semester because the term ends on October 30th, so we adjusted the term to avoid inconvenience from administrative absence. There are lots of things to be discussed but first, we would follow the changes and needs of the industry since it’s an essential task of business school as applied science. Also, we will be expanding foreign student quotas to strengthen industry-university cooperation and the role of KUBS in the world. Our KUBS is full of passionate students, professors, faculty, and alumni. If we gather this passion into directions of study, industry-university cooperation, and social contribution then we could create new values through innovation with clear intelligence and individual doing social responsibilities with a warmhearted mind. Korea University Business School ranked 1st in Hankyung Business National Business School Evaluation for 14 Consecutive Years KKorea University Business School (Dean = Johngseok Bae) took first place in the '2021 National Business School Evaluation' conducted by Hankyung Business. As a result, Korea University Business School has taken the first place for 14 consecutive years since 2008, when the evaluation began, and has firmly maintained its top position in Korea. KUBS took the first place in the overall ranking by taking the lead in four categories out of 9 evaluation items: work adaptability and practical ability, organizational harmony, sincerity and responsibility, and preference for new employees. In particular, it overtook Seoul National University and ranked first in the preference for hiring new employees selected by personnel in charge of major companies, establishing itself as the best training center for human resources in South Korea. Korea University Business School ranks 20th in the world by the FT E-MBA Rankings KUBS ranks 20th by the Financial Times World’s Top 100 E-MBA Rankings 2021 KUBS maintains first place in Korea for 11 consecutive years, moving up seven steps from 27th in 2019 to 20th this year Korea University (President=Chung, Jin Taek) Business School Executive MBA (E-MBA) program ranked 20th in the world by Financial Times (FT) the Top 100 EMBA Programmes. According to the report published by the FT on October 18, 2021, KUBS E-MBA entered the Top 20 business school rankings last year by ranking 19th and has been maintaining the status for two consecutive years. Korea University Business School (KUBS) Achieves EQUIS 5-years accreditation for 3 consecutive years After achieving Korea’s first EQUIS accreditation, continues its success for 3 consecutive years... prove its world-class education level through business education accreditation. Korea University Business University (Dean Johngseok Bae) has succeeded in accrediting EQUIS (EFMD Quality Improvement System) business education for three consecutive years by the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD). EFMD strictly evaluates 10 items including for EQUIS accreditation: △ Vision △ Strategy △ Education Environment △ Quality of Curriculum △ Quality of Faculty △ Internationalization △ Student Qualification. Since EQUIS is very strict in its screening criteria, only 191 schools around the world has it, including the University of Cambridge, Beijing University, and the National University of Singapore. Originally, the review was scheduled to be conducted by an EFMD review team visiting KUBSin May 2020, but it was postponed once due to the COVID-19 situation and then conducted online in December 2020. However, in online screening process, interviews were conducted for various members, including △ Professor △ Staff △ Students △ Graduates by Course, and so on. After a three-day in-depth review, the review team gave an excellent evaluation of the research capabilities and educational environment of KUBS, which is closely related to actual cases. In particular, the team praised the competitiveness of KUBS, saying, "It is very impressive that the KUBS have established a Business Analytics course and Center for Digital Transformation and Business to meet the demands of the 4th industrial revolution society." As a result, KUBS achieved EQUIS accreditation for the first time in Korea in 2007, and succeeded in five-year certification in all three re-accreditation reviews, earning it a "Special Re-accreditation" status. Through this privilege, five years later, the five-year accreditation can be extended again through a simple screening process. Dean said, "Korea University business school proved that it is a business university suitable for global standards by successfully accredited by EQUIS for the first time in Korea for three consecutive times." [Interview with Professor Song Oh Yoon] First Female Faculty Inaugurated as a Management Board Q. You are the first female faculty to be inaugurated as a management board of KUBS. What is your impression on this? I understand that the phrase ‘first female member’ might sound like a special issue but I personally do not feel much things from it, and I just feel that I should be highly responsible for this role. From now on, I should focus on the ways to contribute in KUBS management and to preserve the legacy of KUBS, which has been stacked up by a lot of great faculty members and students. Recently I find a lot of female talents taking the leadership in business, and the society is changing to embrace the growth of female leadership. Having been working in KUBS, I haven’t experienced any discriminations between male and female members, so that I haven’t realized that I am the first female faculty member who was appointed as a board. Nevertheless, no matter how I personally feel about the title ‘first female board’, I believe the key issue in a female joining the leadership group of KUBS is to direct us to pursue diversity in management. It is clear that our society can now easily find out diversity as a quantitative measure, but I think we have much things to solve when it comes to the qualitative diversity. For the prosperity of organization, improving the quality of diversity is very important and I believe the other board members are resonated with its context. Q. Please introduce your role and concentration for your term in office. My position is a vice-president in research, and my role has 5 big categories: △Faculty Research Support △ Campus Internalization △ Management of Career Development Center △ Management of Start-up Institute △ Observation of Domestic and Global Ranking of KUBS. I have lots of concentrations in different fields but I’ll strive to balance my workloads in order to work for every part of school where my support is needed. My primary concentration will be on broadening the foundation of KUBS’s research infrastructure. Second, I’ll be striving to support the departments that are working for international businesses, such as AACSB, Outbound Research, Internships. Another important division in KUBS is Career Development Center, where students can search for diversified career paths and develop their experience in outside work spaces. At last, KUBS Startup Center will open up further startup opportunities for students who are interested in developing their own business and services. Q. Please share your plans and goals as a female leadership in KUBS. KUBS is an elephant organization that manages thousands of students, 80+ faculty members, and about 40 administrative officers. Making developments in KUBS cannot be done by the efforts from 5 leadership board itself but it will be possible when all the members are trying their best to advance the value of KUBS with a huge proud of ourselves in mind. Therefore, I will do my best in improving the qualitative infrastructure so that students and other staffs can develop their own pride in KUBS community so forth. At last, I personally hope a ‘female leadership’ to become a non-special title in KUBS, and I wish KUBS to become a place where everyone can realize their dreams no matter who they are and where they from. In that way, KUBS becoming a global leading business school will not be just a dream but a real objective that we can soon achieve.

Korea University E-MBA Ranked 19th in UK Financial Times Top 100 E-MBA Rankings 8 steps up from 27th in 2019...Ten consecutive years of 'domestic No. 1' Korea University Business School (hereinbelow KUBS, Dean=Jae Wook Kim) Executive MBA (E-MBA) course ranked 19th in the world in the "2020 Top 100 EMBA Programs" by the Financial Times (FT). According to data released by FT on October 26, 2020, E-MBA of KUBS rose eight steps to 19th place from 27th in 2019, ranking first in Korea for the 10th consecutive year. It was ranked higher than the world's prestigious business school, △University of Pennsylvania: Wharton (24th) △National University of Singapore (26th) △ Columbia Business School (28th), and Korea University achieved the highest rank since 12th in 2012 in the FT E-MBA list. This year's top prize was an E-MBA course jointly run by the U.S.-based Kellogg School of Management and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The reason why Korea University's E-MBA ranking stands out is because it made it into the top 20 with its own program alone. While a number of top-ranked Asian universities jointly run degree courses with other universities, Korea University has proved that its practice-oriented curriculum, which strengthens its competence as a manager, is among the best in the world by achieving 19th place with a single program.
