Getting Practical: Learning from Senior Professionals

On September 15th and 22nd, large-scale public lectures took place at the SUPEX Hall in LG-POSCO Hall. These events were a collaborative effort organized by the 55th Student Council, FILM, of Korea University Business School (Dean=Sang Yong Kim), in partnership with the Career Development Center and the KUBS Alumni Association. These lectures were tailored to meet the needs of KUBS students who expressed interest in career-related topics. In particular, each lecture featured five speakers from the same profession to provide a comprehensive perspective on that field. On the 15th, an alumnus from the finance industry delivered a lecture, while on the 22nd, an alumnus representing startups was the featured speaker.

Each lecture featured five speakers, each presenting for 30 minutes. They discussed the general overviews of their respective industries, the preferred qualifications in the field, and shared their personal experiences. Following the presentations, during the Q&A panel session, students had the opportunity to ask questions, including those that were pre-selected. These lectures went beyond merely sharing success stories; they offered valuable insights into academic majors, the necessary qualifications for a profession, and practical career or entrepreneurial advice. Additionally, as all the speakers were KUBS alumni, these lectures also played a role in fostering communication and mentorship between current students and graduates.

Mr. Jung Won Lee, the President of KUBS Student Council, stated, "One of our council’s promises was to improve mentoring lectures, and we fulfilled that commitment during the Job Fair 2023, known as ‘KUzania,’ on September 4th.” He continued, “We collaboated with the KUBS Alumni Association throughout the spring semester to make these lectures possible.” President Lee also mentioned that the Alumni Association is committed to long-term and continuous projects, and as a result, two more lectures are scheduled for November following the success of the September sessions.

The participants expressed high satisfaction with the event, as it aligned with the preferences of current students. In response, President Lee commented, "students seemed to appreciate that the speakers were available for questions not only during the lecture but also during the post-lecture gatherings. I believe the high level of satisfaction is due to the students being able to engage in meaningful and in-depth conversations, which went beyond the typical formal lectures.” He also noted, “We had attendees not only from KUBS but also from various other majors. It was particularly gratifying to witness them learning and discussing entrepreneurial ideas together during the lectures.”

Participants shared their positive feedback, with some stating, “It was valuable to fact-check my existing knowledge of the finance industry while hearing from alumni who have established themselves in the field.” Others noted, “The lectures offered practical insights and delved deeper into the subject matter compared to others. The Q&A and post-lecture sessions allowed us to ask specific questions one-on-one, which was highly beneficial.” Lastly, another student mentioned, “Even though the lecture wasn’t directly related to my field of interest, I still found it informative and practical, enabling me to connect with experienced alumni through their stories.

Meanwhile, these lectures will be on a brief hiatus in October and will resume in November. Details regarding the upcoming lectures will be announced through the KUBS Student Council’s Instagram account (@kubs_film).
