From building a team to decision-making, special lecture from CSO Jihun Kang for start-ups
The lecture of ‘Entrepreneurship Academy Lecture Series’, hosted by KUBS Startup Station (Director=Hojung Shin), was held at The Stage, the second floor of Business School Main Hall on September 27th (Tue). CANLAB CSO Jihun Kang gave the lecture on the theme of “Essense for Start-up Teams”.
CSO Jihun Kang started his lecture by sharing how he began start-ups by frankly speaking his stories from his childhood to his undergraduate days. Through the IMF crisis, he experienced that there are no more stable workplaces to work for his whole life. After that CSO Kang decided to start up a game company that he was interested in, while he was running a website business and studying at the same time since he was an undergraduate.
Furthermore, the lecture was followed by CSO Kang’s advice on start-up team building. He said since the 2000s when there was a change of perception towards start-ups, people started to build a start-up team earlier than before. Also, he said that even though start-ups by undergraduates had increased, it is not easy to make a good team.
Especially, CSO Kang emphasized the importance of motivation and expertise. He said the key to a start-up is a team with vision getting professionalism. Also, it is important to make a team with colleagues who can build motivation and expertise on their own, along with a long-term perspective.
He also mentioned the importance of strategic thinking in marketing and vision. Start-ups at an early stage tend to underestimate the market of the field, but the market should be big enough and it has to be verified with a big vision. He emphasized start-ups should have a big vision but when planning strategy at an early stage to build your profile, you have to focus on making keywords that would make your business No. 1 in the field.
Furthermore, CSO Kang also explained about running a team after building a team. Managing team reputation is very important to CEO in running a team and prudent recruitment and dismissal procedures would bring talented people. He also commented that debate itself is needed with lots of opinions, but you should meet a consensus when deciding on strategy and important goals for the team.
After the lecture, participants had a Q&A session asking about each phase of start-ups and the services that CANLAB KOREA provides to start-up teams.
