Can artificial intelligence and natural language processing transform our understanding of global development?

Korea University’s Development Futures Lab (DFL), led by Professor Cuz Potter, invites you to submit proposals for exploring how emerging technologies—like NLP, machine learning, and advanced data processing—can unlock new insights into international development cooperation and aid effectiveness.

Funded by the UNDP Seoul Policy Centre, this project will select four teams of research residents to advance academic understanding of Official Development Assistance (ODA) through comprehensive analysis of its determinants, effects on donor countries, and relationships with other policy domains such as trade, investment, and diplomatic relations. Each team will propose its own ODA-related questions and develop methods to answer them that employ emerging data technologies.

Teams might explore contemporarily relevant questions such as:

  • What quantitative metrics best predict a project portfolio's vulnerability to donor funding cuts?
  • How do data governance structures shape global aid flows?
  • How can predictive analytics and digital transformation drive smarter development decisions?
  • How do changes in donor countries' trade policies, migration policies, or climate commitments correlate with changes in their ODA patterns?

Selected teams will work within an emerging ecosystem of researchers and practitioners to combine quantitative data analysis with policy relevance and interdisciplinary thinking in ways that will advance data-based decision making in the development sector.

Each team can consist of one to three members and will receive KRW 6,000,000 in research funding to support their activities. Over a six-month project period, teams will work in an autonomous research setting to integrate multiple large datasets and produce actionable, policy-relevant findings.

Before applications open, join our online Info Session to learn more about the project, application process, and how your research can shape the future of international development data.

Info Session Schedule:
