Panel Talk with KUBS Alumni in Different Fields
KUBS Career Hub launched the “Panel Talk with KUBS Alumni in Different Fields.” The alumni who are in the field of △Sales & Marketing and △Accounting & Finance were invited for the session and had a time to speak with students.
On May 12, the Penal Talk was held in the LG-POSCO Building with alumni in sales and marketing fields. The alumni working in diverse occupations participated in the session as a panel: alumnus Tae Kyu Kim (Business Administration, ’04) from Korea Investment Value Asset Management; alumnus Jaesik Jung (Business Administration, ’06) from Hotel Silla; alumnus Chul Hwan Kim (Business Administration, ’08) from Shinhan Card; alumnus Sangjoon Jung (Business Administration, ’09) from Kia Motors.
The panels answered frequently asked questions, which were collected before the session, and then had a Q&A session where students can ask any question freely. One of the students asked alumnus Chul Hwan Kim about what was his motivation to apply for Shinhan Card. “During my undergraduate studies, I wanted to utilize big data.” alumnus Kim said. “The reason I decided to join Shinhan Card is because I found out that the company has a big data center, which allows me to gain insights into purchasing trends.
The students also received advice based on their academic year. “I recommend 4th-year students to join a study group and 3rd-year students to learn Microsoft Excel,” alumnus Jaesik Jung said. “It is important for 1st-year and 2nd-year students to pursue just one thing intensely, such as traveling or joining a club.” Lastly, alumnus Tae Kyu Kim advised students to choose a job they love. “When you strive to do your absolute best on something you love, there is certainly an open path in your career and maybe even lead you to a startup business,” alumnus Kim said. “If you put too much effort into ‘building specs (derived from the word “specifications”)’ and ‘studying for an aptitude test,’ you may not realize which position fits you the best, and this can give you a tough time.”
Meanwhile, the Penal Talk with alumni in Accounting and Fianance fields was also held on May 19. At the event, alumnus Han Gil Kim (Business Administration, ’06) from Daelim Corporation, Daeho Kim (Business Administration, ’06) from Administration Team at the Shilla Duty Free Shop, Hakyung Kim (Business Administration, ’06) from Finance Team at e-mart, and Hee Chul Lee (Business Administration, ’08) from Finance Team at Hyundai Engineering & Construction attended the event as a panel.
In respond to one participant asked that the difference between financial accounting in class and a company, alumnus Han Gil Kim said, “terms and concepts are similar; however, every company has a different accounting program so new employees have to learn new things after they join the company. Yet, it would be beneficial for potential employees to understand the financial operations of a business if they already learned the concepts through lectures”
The penals also gave advice on preparing for a job search. One of the questions was about whether CPA preparation is needed or not, to which Lee replied “most large companies do not demand professionalism in finance and accounting. Information you have learned at Korea University Business School is enough.” The alumni generously shared their career stories as well. “I was able to eliminate the option that does not fit me because I studied two areas that are diametrically opposed to one another,” alumnus Daeho Kim, who studied both Marketing and CPA, said. “It is more useful to know about economy and issues on companies than building specs.”
“I hope no one misjudges simply by career prospects,” alumnus Hee Chul Lee said. “I hope all of you can find a job that fits you after thinking about your future over and over again.”
