KUBS ranked first in the 2008 ‘Korean Business School Evaluation’ survey conducted by Hankyung Business Weekly

Which school is the best business school in Korea? The HR personnel at 200 Korean large companies were asked this question. Although somewhat predicted, the survey outcome was slightly different from what the general public would have expected. Korea University received 1st place while Seoul National University stood at 3rd place. Universities that have undertaken active reform recently received good results overall. In general the provincial universities did not fare well in the survey. The survey results were thoroughly analyzed in the Hankyung Business Weekly article. The article reveals the secret behind the success of business schools that are hugely popular among senior high-school students. It also examines the growing investment by universities into business schools. The results of the survey can be summarized as ‘the establishment of Korea University as the undisputed leader’ and ‘the sluggish performance by Seoul National University’.

KUBS ranked number one in most survey categories including work adaptability, compatibility with organization and business mindedness etc. Of the schools surveyed, KUBS was the only school that received points far exceeding 5000. With the goal of becoming one of the world’s top 50 business schools by 2015, KUBS has pursued strong reforms during the past several years. These efforts were seen as the main contributor to the outstanding results achieved by KUBS. Within Korea University, it was said that they were confident that KUBS would take 1st place if the business schools in Korea were to be evaluated.

One of basis for this, are international case competitions where business undergraduates from all over the world come together to analyze actual business cases. Within a set period of time (20-30 minutes) students must analyze real business situations, identify problems and present strategic solutions. The competitions are hosted by prestigious universities from around the world such as the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and the National University of Singapore. To date, KUBS is the only business school in Korea that has actively participated in and received invitations from international business competitions. KUBS took part in competitions that were held at the University of Western Ontario last March and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology last October. It has also received an invitation for a competition that will take place at the University of Southern California, USA in February of next year. Korea University explains that it shows KUBS is globally recognized top business school in Korea.

Yonsei School of Business ranked top in globalization systems, but in all other areas scored lower than its rival Korea University. Seoul National University, which takes pride in being nation’s number one university, was pushed down to the 3rd place by the two top private universities – Korea University and Yonsei University. Human resources managers’ assessment on Seoul National University Business School was somewhat different from what people would ordinarily think. Seoul National University (total 3905 points) was not even far ahead of Sungkyunkwan University (ranked fourth with total 3291 points), barely managing to win the 3rd place.
Relatively good result for Sungkyunkwan University is noteworthy. The interpretation is that Samsung Group’s sponsorship provided stimulus to the university’s growth momentum.

The 2008 National Business School Rankings survey was conducted with executive members and managers in human resources department at top 200 Korean companies, for two weeks from late October to early November. M&C Research was responsible for analyzing the survey results. The survey included as subjects four-year universities that admit 130 or more students to their business school each year (total 45 universities). Seven areas covered in the survey include work adaptability, compatibility with organization, development potential, business mindedness and employer’s preference. Most preferred university was given ten points, second most preferred nine points and least preferred one point. These points were added up at the end to decide the overall rankings.

The purpose of the survey was to see which schools foster excellent talent and ultimately to find out which business school represents Korea. The survey aims to upgrade Korea’s business schools a notch higher and nurture global talent that can lead in the era of global economic competition. Several media companies have carried out surveys of universities in the past. However, if past surveys covered entire universities, this survey was different in that it focused only on business schools. Out of the many different departments at a university, the survey specifically evaluated business schools. This reflects the current trend in which the star department of a university is shifting from the law school to the business school, with the recent introduction of law schools.
