University Campus Going Underground… Korea University Completes the 'Hana Square'

Korea University held a completion ceremony of the 'Hana Square,' which was an underground plaza, at the Anam Science Field Campus on the 28th.

Hana Square is a large 28,000 square meter scale student well-being facility.

The building was built with sunken structure which crossed east to west in front of the Science Library.

At the first level underground, learning facilities such as lecture halls, seminar rooms, 650 seat reading room, and exclusive reading room for notebook computers were prepared.

Various cultural spaces such as fitness center, performing hall, DVD room, multi-media room, and book store, and food and drink shops including specialty coffee shops occupied the Square. At the second and third level underground parking lot, 750 cars can be parked.

Since the completion of the Hana Square, along with the underground plaza of the Liberal Arts Field Campus 'Central Plaza,' which was completed in 2000, Korea University has built a environmental friendly campus without cars on the ground and with more green spaces.

After Korea University built the nation's first underground plaza, the 30,000 square meter scale Central Plaza, Ewha Woman's University and Sookmyung Women's University visited it to bench mark, and Yonsei, Sungkyunkwan, and Busan Universities are also considering to build underground plazas.

Ewha Woman's University is building 6 levels underground, 66,000 square meter scale underground campus. This campus is planned to be completed in next December, so Ewha Woman's University will also have 'Car-less Campus.'

Korea University President Euh Yoon Dae said in the congratulatory address, "the Hana Square, along with the underground campus Central Plaza built at the Liberal Arts Campus in 2002, will be the cradle of global leaders of Korea."

At the day's completion ceremony, around 100 guests from various fields including President of the Korea Central Academy Hyun Seung Jong, Waseda University President Shirai Katsuhiko, the Hana Financial Group President Kim Seung Yoo, President of the Doosan Industry Development Jung Ji Taek, and former President of Korea University Kim Jung Bae participated.
