KUBS Professor Woochan Kim awarded ‘50 Excellent Academic/Research Support Project’
KUBS Professor Woochan Kim was awarded the ’50 Excellent Academic/Research Support Project’ by the Ministry of Education.
The awards are given to 50 excellent research projects among 12.000 projects provided with government funds last year. The winning projects get additional points in the national research project selection process. The awards were promoted to inspire passion for research and motivate continuous research development by selecting excellent achievements.
The project from Prof. Kim was on ‘The effect of enterprise grouping on the enterprise investment efficiency in the industry other than group’. He empirically proved two things using domestic enterprise data. First, the enhancement of the inner capital market to lend funds between enterprises in the group would decrease investment efficiency by making it difficult to raise external capital from enterprises outside the group. Secondly, the enhancement of protecting investors like minority shareholders would alleviate those negative effects above. The project also highlighted enterprises outside the group, not only enterprises inside the group when studying the effects of group’s inner capital market. Also, the project was reviewed that it provided another important reason to the authorities why enhancement on protecting investors is essential.
Meanwhile, 7 projects from Korea University were selected in fields of Humanities and Society (Humanities), Humanities and Society (Social Science), and Science and Engineering (ICT·Convergence Research) marking overwhelmingly the most among the universities in Korea. Research ecosystem that motivates convergence research in various fields also remains in the background on why excellent projects from Korea University were selected as the top 0.4% of the total. Also, the environment that enables creative research along with an atmosphere that encourages and supports excellent researchers played a crucial role.
