Interview with KUBS Associate Dean Jaehwan Kim
“Expansion of Ability to Enhance Power of Thought”

Q. Congratulations on your appointment as the Associate Dean of Korea University Business School (KUBS). Could you share a few words with us?

I will always keep in mind the responsibilities of an Associate Dean during my term of office. Furthermore, I will listen to voices of all KUBS members over and over again.

KUBS began its history with Korea University. All organizations have a permanent mission. The mission of Korea University is “National Salvation through Education (敎育救國)” meaning “Promise the future of the nation by providing high-quality education to many people.” I believe this mission has no exception to all KUBS members.

What would it be like if professors were replaced by artificial intelligence such as AlphaGo? If the current educational structure – professors delivering knowledge, students obtaining knowledge, and professors evaluating the students – is maintained, and furthermore if it cannot be said that something special – irreplaceable by artificial intelligence – is produced from the KUBS educational system, KUBS will face difficulties carrying out responsibilities being the first and best business school.

Because of that, I want to focus on helping students develop the “Power of Thought” by themselves. Thus, the ways of professor preparing for lectures and of meeting students in class must be changed. I will do my absolute best to maintain efforts of our faculty and staff to develop systems that enhance students’ “Power of Thought.”

When a social consensus of “Power of thought is commonly founded from KUBS alumni,” is formed, a virtuous circle in which future students with potential aim for KUBS by noticing this value will be established. As an Associate Dean, my duty is to make prospective students, who understand the KUBS mission, thereby wishing to enhance the “Power of Thought,” study at KUBS.
