⊙ 2009 Business School Evaluation, ‘KU’ came out on top smiling
In the 2010 college admission it is expected that Seoul National University Business School will demand the highest test scores for admission. However, college admission test scores and the evaluation of companies did not match.
KUBS once again firmly reaffirmed its position as the leading school. Yonsei University (2nd ), Seoul National University (3rd ) and Sunkyunkwan University (4th ) rankings remained the same as last year. When examining the top ten schools, one noticeable difference was the change in ranking between Sogang University and Hanyang University with Sogang University up one place from last year (5th). Chung-ang University (7th) and Kyunghee University (8th) rankings remained the same. Kyungbook University which came in at 12th last year, joined the rankings of the top ten schools. Busan University and Kyungbook University were the two universities from the provincial areas that made it in to the top ten.
Of the eight categories in the survey, KUBS ranked 1st in six categories, attaining a total of 5733 points. This was 594 points higher than Yonsei University (5139 points) which came in at 2nd place. Korea University has many reasons to celebrate. Korea University was ranked 1st in not only the Hankyung Business ‘2009 Korea Business School Evaluation’ but was also ranked 1st for ‘school to recommend’ by Eduniversal a world-renowned business school evaluation institution. The Eduniversal survey is conducted with 1000 deans from business schools around the world.
In the business school evaluation which was carried out by Hankyung Business for the first time last year, many people were surprised to see Korea University come in at 1st place outperforming traditionally strong schools such as Seoul National University and Yonsei University. Following last year, KU ranked 1st in this year’s survey reinforcing its status as the best Korean business school in name and in substance.
Traditionally, Korea University Law School and Yonsei University Business School were comparable in their reputations. Although recently KU overtook Yonsei University, Yonsei University was still able to maintain its reputation by gaining 2nd place in the overall ratings. Yonsei Univeristy ranked 1st in two of the eight survey categories: globalization system and creative solutions. These results were in line with the general image that people have of Yonsei students.
Students admitted to Seoul National University have higher SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores than Korea University and Yonsei University. However, in the evaluation by HR personnel at companies SNU graduates remained in 3rd place, outperformed by KU and Yonsei University.
In an interview with Hankyung Business in April, Tae-sik Ahn Dean of SNU Business School said “As a public university we face obstacles in becoming a global business school because of the limitations we face in funding and admission quota. At 130 students, the admission quota for SNU business school is only a third of that of KU and Yonsei University. The inflexible fund operation by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is hindering the school’s globalization program. As a result, the school is lagging behind in the competition to secure prominent foreign faculty.”
