2023 Spring Semester Graduate School Application for Exemption from Foreign Language Examination for Thesis/Dissertation
In accordance with Article 38 of Chapter 4 of the Detailed Enforcement Regulations of the Constitution of the Graduate School (General), applications for exemption from foreign language examination for thesis/dissertation submission shall proceed as follows. Apply for an exemption within the application period.
* Korean language is mandatory for all international students.
[Application for Exemption from Foreign Language Examination]
1. Eligibility: Students of a master’s, doctoral, or integrated master-doctoral degree program
2. Application Period: March 15, 2023 (Wed) 10:00 ~ March 24, 2023 (Fri) 16:00 (Including all degree certificate and transcript submissions)
★★ No exceptions on the application after period★★
* You must apply in the application period and there are no exceptions due to the thesis examination application schedule from April 17th, 2023.
* No additional application procedures are given, so please apply in the Fall semester application period
3. Application Procedure
A. Official foreign language proficiency exam results: Go to KUPID (Korean. ver) → 학적/졸업 → 각종시험 신청/확인 → 외국어시험 면제신청 →신청화면 and upload a scanned copy of the official foreign language proficiency exam results obtained within two years prior to the application date.
B. Students who either acquired a grade of at least a B in the foreign language courses replacing a foreign language examination or passing the on-campus graduation qualification English exam: No additional application for the exemption is required.
(Students can check whether they have passed the English exam via KUPID→ Registration/Graduation → Application/Verification for Exams → Current Status of Exams)
C. Students either acquiring a grade of at least a B in a regular Korean language course established from KU Seoul Campus Foreign Language Center or KU Sejong Institute of International Affairs and Education: upload a scanned copy of a transcript
D. Exemption application by an academic transcript from a foreign university: Students must apply for exemption and bring an original copy of the academic transcript to the Administration office of the Graduate School (Main Library (Graduate School) Room 127) for authenticity verification

4. Date of Confirmation for Exemption from the Foreign Language Examination for the 2023 Spring semester: April 14, 2023 (Fri) (TBC)

5. Note
A. Students entering KU from March 2018 must check the changes in exemption standards for passing the German examination
B. Official foreign language proficiency exam results must be obtained within two years prior to the application date (for exam results that expire during the application period, students must upload them before their expiration and notify the staff in charge of foreign language exams by phone).
C. For IELTS, TestDaf, ZMP, and degree certificates, students must submit the original results form to the Administration office of the Graduate School after completing the online application (exemption procedure will not be completed if the original results form is not submitted).
D. Applicants completing a regular Korean language course must enclose a transcript (KU Foreign Language Center: http://langtopia.korea.ac.kr).

F. Standards for the Japanese examination were established in the 2021 Fall semester.
G. On-campus graduation qualification English examination results are applicable until the TOEIC examination taken on April
[Foreign Language Courses Replacing Foreign Language Examination]
A. Students acquiring a grade of B or above (for General Graduate School, minimum grade requirement may vary depending on the type of graduate schools) in the foreign language courses replacing foreign language examination will be deemed as having passed the foreign language examination.
※ KU-KIST Graduate School of Convergence: Only degree candidates (registered degree candidates) and enrolled students (master’s degree students who have completed at least five semesters and integrated master-doctoral degree students who have completed at least nine semesters) are eligible to take foreign language courses, and those who acquire a grade of A or above will be considered as passed the foreign language examination.
※ Inquire at the Administration Office of the affiliated graduate school for eligibility to take foreign language courses as eligibility varies depending on the type of graduate school.
