My Experience in Toronto at York University (Schulich School of Business)
My name is Johnathan Hrehoruk (조나단) 2010120322, and I am a third year business student. Though I am Canadian from the city of Toronto I decided to go on exchange for one semester during the spring semester starting in January 3 until April 18 2012. Because I am an international student here in Korea and have been away from my family in friends, and due to financial reasons, I was able to go back home for one semester on the agreement that I would help educate Canadian’s and other foreign students about Korea and especially about life as a “Korea University” student. I entered Schulich Business School with pride, informing all of the regular and exchange students that I am a “Korea University student.” Although I was the only student from Korea University, there were a few Korean students from Yonsei and Seoul National University that were also participating on the exchange who I was able to become close too. We worked as a team to help teach other students about Korean culture and often took students to Korean restaurants, “노래방” and also “소주방”. Even though I am not Korean, I feel a strong connection to this culture and felt proud to educate my own Canadian people and other foreign exchange students about Korean lifestyle and culture and at the same time learn about other cultures and make lifelong friends. At Schulich there were many second generation Korean students and non-Korean students asking me about Korea University as they were interested about going there on exchange. I answered all their questions and helped promote Korea University in any way possible.
In regards to the education, the classes are very demanding and require a very strong ethic in order to be successful. The atmosphere is very competitive and I noticed that Schulich caters more strongly towards finance and accounting students as Accounting and Finance is what Schulich is famous for.
The school offers a good buddy program where there were functions held every Thursday and Friday night for exchange students to participate in. Even though the winter was cold, we always went out and made the best out of the night.
In regards to the campus, the campus is very far from Toronto itself. It is about 40 minutes to one hour to Downtown Toronto. Surrounding the university there is very little offered, so the students are very dependent on the campus itself.
Overall, my experience at Schulich was good, but the location of the campus and the very intense competitive atmosphere of the University were two aspects I don’t find recommendable.
