The number of cases where KUBS (Korea University Business School) M.S./Ph.D. recipients are appointed as full-time professors in foreign universities, is rising. Although it is very unusual for Korean professors in the Business Administration field to be appointed as full-time faculty members in places such as △North and South America, △Europe, and △Singapore, there have been considerable cases in which business schools located in those nations often actively scouted KUBS doctors by recognizing their remarkable research achievements.
Dr. Haejung Na, (majoring in Finance under the supervision of Professor Dongcheol Kim) was appointed as a full-time assistant professor at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State L.A.). Previously, there have been occasional cases where Ph.D. recipients in finance who received their degree in Korea have been appointed as an assistant professor at universities in Southeast Asia, Australia and Europe. Dr. Na, however, is the first in Korea majoring in finance to be appointed as an assistant professor at a university in the U.S. Such a case is very rare in the field of social science. A graduate of Korea University with a B.A. in Economics (with a second major in Business Administration), Dr. Na a received her Master’s degree in Finance from Korea University Business School. She is expected to receive her doctoral degree in Finance in February 2016. Cal State L.A., to which Dr. Na was appointed, was founded in 1947 and is located in the heart of Los Angeles. Currently more than 20,000 students are enrolled in the university, and the number of its graduates has reached over 230,000. The MBA program at Cal State L.A. has been recognized by the Princeton Review as one of the finest MBA programs in the U.S.
As Kia Motors advances into Monterey, Mexico, local universities are accelerating their efforts to hire professors who will instruct and conduct research on Korean companies. As a result, Dr. Ju-Hee Kim was appointed as a full-time international professor at Tecnológico de Monterrey at Monterrey in Mexico. Tecnológico de Monterrey at Monterrey, the largest university in Central and South America with over 90,000 students, is eminent for having a high-quality business school. “We were deeply impressed by her projects, such as ‘analysis of labor-management relations in Mexico,’ ‘risk factors analysis of companies that have a foothold in Central and South America and establishment of sustainable mutual cooperation,’ and ‘direction of labor-management relations in automobile industries and capacity-building of labor management,’” said the university officials, explaining the reasons for the faculty appointment. Dr. Kim is a Korean labor specialist who received her Master’s and doctoral degrees in Labor Economics at Korea University after earning her Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University.
Dr. Youngju Kim was appointed as a full-time assistant professor at NEOMA Business School in France. As a result, she will be joining NEOMA Business School in September 2016. NEOMA Business School, to which Dr. Kim was appointed, ranked ninth among Grandes écoles in France. The Grandes écoles are unique and traditional elite higher education institutions that exist only France. The institution, considered to cultivate elites with a top-tier education, accepts a few freshmen through a strict selection process with a high competition ratio. A graduate of Korea University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, Dr. Kim also received her Master’s and doctoral degrees in Business Administration from KUBS, with her theses titled “Movie Choice under Joint Decision” and “Direct Utility Model for Multiple-Discreteness Incorporating Attribute-level Constraints,” respectively. Dr. Kim served as a researcher at the Marketing Research Center of Institution for Business Research & Education at Korea University before working as a research professor at BK21 PLUS Project at KUBS.
Dr. Il Joo Kang (majoring in Accounting under the supervision of Professor Yong Keun Yoo) was appointed as a professor at SIM University. Dr. Kang has been working as a full-time professor in Accounting and has conducted lectures and research studies. The SIM University officials stated, “This faculty appointment was finalized because Dr. Kang’s qualifications, such as excellent research capabilities that were proven in her dissertation and her outstanding lectures in English, fit for our image of the talented professor that SIM University was looking for.” Dr. Kang enrolled in KUBS (M.S./Ph.D.) and presented her dissertation titled “How do Institutional Investors Interact with Sell-Side Analysts?” at the Accounting Conferences in the U.S. and Europe, where she was recognized for her excellence in the doctoral dissertation.Ever since KUBS graduate school was selected for the large-scale project in the “BK21 PLUS” of the Ministry of Education, the college has conducted various projects in order to spread Business Administration research studies and education model across Asia and the world. One of the projects was making Ph.D. recipients from Korea University professors at universities in Asia, and Dr. Kang marked the first case. As an open university that offers a variety of degree programs in conjunction with foreign universities, SIM University, to which Dr. Kang was appointed, was founded in 1964 by the Ministry of Education in Singapore. SIM University is currently receiving 55% of research subsidies from the government, with a student body of 36,000.
As global academia expresses a keen interest in M.S./Ph.D. recipients from KUBS, the Master’s in International Management (MIM) program, operated by CEMS Global Alliance, has taken the spotlight. The program is focused on providing the internship exchange program for students taking Master’s courses from its member schools. Students can apply for the exchange program to study abroad in 30 member schools for up to two semesters, which will broaden their global research perspectives. In addition, they can participate in an internship offered by business-university partner companies for eight weeks. The global companies that provide internships are △McKinsey & Company, △Google, and △L'Oréal. KUBS is the only Korean school that was ratified to be a full academic member in the alliance.
Dong-One Kim, Dean of KUBS, said, “The reason prestigious business schools are vigorously recruiting KUBS doctors is because of their excellent research achievements.” He added, “As KUBS aims to become a World-Class Knowledge Hub in Business, we will continue to expand educational-industrial interaction with prestigious business schools around the world through the CEMS Global Alliance.”
