More than 4 out of 10 are from ‘SKY’… Most common major was business, 19%

This year, one out of two persons who got promoted to a higher executive position was from ‘SKY’ university. The policy of companies is “breaking down academic cleavages“, but still a high percentage of people who lead the corporations are from so-called “prestigious universities”.

On 14th, Hankyung conducted research from Samsung, LG, SK, Hyundai Heavy Industries, GS, Kolon, Shinsegae, E-land, etc. Out of 198 executive officers, 88 officers are from ‘SKY’ universities.

If we divide it into a smaller group, officers from Seoul University were 49 (24.7%), 22 were from KU (11.1%), and 17 from Yonsei University (8.6%). There were more Seoul University graduate officers than KU and Yonsei University combined. As for ‘non-SKY’ universities, Hanyang University was ranked 4th place, with 15 officers(7.6%). As for local universities, 11 were from Kyungbuk University and 19 were from Busan University (5.6%). Out of these 19, 14 officers were from the Engineering major (74%). If you wish to overcome the weakness of local universities in getting hired, it seems like studying Engineering would be the right choice.

Financial officials said “Recently corporations have tried to employ and promote based on their ability and talents. However, it still shows that a high number of officers from well-known universities receive a higher opportunity in getting hired and promoted. It’s certainly not out of intention, but we still see a certain phenomenon regarding university bias.

If we look into detail, in terms of major, officers with Business major were 38 (19.1%) being the most common. Electronics (29), and Economics (13) followed. In terms of single departments, officers from SNU Electronic Engineering and KUBS were the largest in number. From these two departments, a total of 18 (9 from each) officers advanced to executive directors. In terms of departments, Engineering was the highest, and was followed by commerce-related majors and then non-commerce humanities departments.

This analysis shows a clear correlation between popular university majors and high rank officer’s university majors. This analysis also shows that officers with Business degree or Engineering degree have the highest chance of success and promotion.
