2014.11.25
KUBS won first place in Hankyung Business national assessment for seven consecutive years. It is difficult to climb up to the top, yet it’s much more difficult to remain on top. On November 17th, we visited KUBS Anam Campus to ask for the secret behind their well-known competitiveness. Dean Dong-One Kim of KUBS greeted us with open arms, and it just happened to be the day they announced the new slogan of KUBS. Dean Dong-One Kim said "We should educate the next generation in ways that give inspiration, so that business will take social responsibility." He also mentioned that KUBS will “focus on four different categories of internationalization, decentralization, performance-based evaluation, and humanistic education, to improve the quality of students.
- Why do you think KUBS constantly receives good reviews from human resource managers?
"From the past, we've shown great bondage between senior members and junior members. During the school years, students will form networks among themselves and also with the professors. Emphasizing on courtesy and cooperation between each other in the workplace has earned this evaluation. There are a lot of cases where KUBS students receive great respect and be recognized for their work, which lets them end up in important positions. We will try our best to keep it this way and try to focus on cultivating good personality."
- We heard faculty research capacity have been receiving good reviews worldwide. Tell us about it.
“There is an assessment which evaluates the research capacity of Business School around the world with the most authority. Currently we are at 89th place in the World Business School research ranking, announced by University of Texas. In fact, whenever a foreign university visits our faculty, they are surprised by our level of faculty members. We have faculty members who have experience of learning and teaching, not just within the country but overseas as well. We have invited people who have paved the highest achievements in their own field, and in addition to this, performance-based system have settled in and kept our engine going for past 20 years."
- Balance between research and lecture seems to be important in fostering a research environment.
“There are 89 of excellent faculty members, and for each faculty member, they need to open up 6 credits per semester. Most global top schools use a similar system. Lecture and research doesn’t always compromise each other. People who give great lectures also tend to do well in research. Our faculty members are inspired by students, and are able to gain a different perspective of the field through them. Given that it remains to be not a great burden, we believe students, lectures, and research papers can help each other to provide synergy."
- You've become new Dean. What kind of philosophy and plans do you have?
"We’ve just held a faculty meeting, and we came up with the new slogan of KUBS, which is ‘Business For Society - Inspiring Next Leader’. It is basically saying we must provide the education that can contribute to the society and the happiness and development of the community, and inspire the next generation’s leaders. There are four execution strategies, of which the first is globalization. Out of 89 full-time faculty members, 10% are from foreign faculty. 67% of our lectures are English-based, and faculty meetings are also conducted in English. In addition, we will try to instill 'decentralization', ‘Plus-Sum Performance-based Evaluation’, and 'humanistic education' in KUBS as our basic strategy.
- Recently you can see the phenomenon where companies tend to recruit students from natural science and engineering, rather than students from humanities and social science department.
"The recent emphasis on science and engineering is a basic cycle we’ve always had. A few years ago, there was a science and engineering aversion. But the current status quo was already predicted about 10 years ago when many schools began converting into Business Schools. It is up to the university to help students adapt. Seeing from past experience as a professor, students with lots of experiences tend to be successful after their graduation. I believe, instead of focusing on skills to get hired, we should make various programs that can give lots of different experiences to students. In KUBS, all students choose a mentor, and receive one-on-one help from them.
- The government is emphasizing creative economy, recommending people to start their own businesses. What is KUBS doing to adjust to this atmosphere?
Starting up new companies is very important. Our school also implicates the importance of starting new businesses; there are limits to economic growth when everything is operated by large enterprises. For the past 5~6 years, we have opened up 5 lectures regarding start-ups. We also open up lots of events so that students may come up with start-up business ideas, and award the winner, while helping them as much as we can.
- When building Hyundai Motors building, support of the Alumni Association provided great help. What kind of role does KUB Alumni Association play?
Unlike any other university, KUBS does not receive money from the school headquarters. Rather the alumni gather and build it with their own strength. I believe KU Alumni Association has the strongest bond, stronger than any other university. Our goal is to strengthen the bonds not just limited to each faculty but for the whole school itself.
- What are the future goals, and what kind of visions do you have?
Our short term goal is to reach rank 3 in Asia, and rank 50 in the world by 2018. Currently we are working on a more long-term plan, which should be completed by 2025. We are trying come up with plans that can help our community, and not just for the shows nor endless competition.
- What does domestic Business Schools need to develop further?
Korea was introduced to the field of Business Administration for the first time in the 1960s. For 40 years, it was more of collecting and importing knowledge from different countries. Professors have put their focus on learning new theory, and teaching them to spread it to others. Now it is time to spread the Korean development model to overseas countries. Our faculty members are already at top level, and we have plenty of infrastructure. It is time for us to create new ideas, and spread it to other countries. KUBS will be the leader in achieving this feat.
