Accepted for Internship at Deutsche Bank Hong Kong
Ho Young Jung (04) will begin his 10 week internship starting from June of this year
Ho Young Jung (Business 04) will begin his summer internship in Hong Kong at the global investment bank Deutsche Bank. Mr. Jung will work as an intern for ten weeks (June-late August, 2009) and travel between Hong Kong and Singapore. Deutsche Bank is one of the world’s greatest banks with over 81,000 employees in 75 countries.
- Tell us about the selection process
I first found about the internship through the Career Center of KUBS. If you pass the 1st resume screening they send you an email congratulating you.
In the first interview there were many questions asking me to further explain what I had written on my resume. There were some technical questions such as the movement of the bond market, good investment methods for the current stock market, how to identify well-performing stocks etc. After passing the 1st round, you take a simple statistics and mathematics test.
In the 2nd round the main questions were about the type of person I am. Unexpectedly, there were many semi-philosophical questions about what I wanted in my life. In other words, they wanted to know what the good grades and hard work was all for. The last interview was conducted directly by the head of the Deutsche Bank Seoul office.
- What sort of activities was helpful?
During my freshmen year, I learned the value of human network through my high-school alumni association (Kyungbok High School-Korea University). Through the various seminars at F.E.S (Future Entrepreneurs’ Society), I basically learned about entrepreneurship which you need in order to become an active leader.
I attended the University of Southern California as an exchange student in my junior year. That was when I started preparing for the financial sector. Most of the classes I took were finance and accounting related. That summer I was chosen as an intern for the Singapore office of JP Morgan. For ten weeks, I worked with different friends from around the world.
During the second semester of my junior year, I searched the KUBS Career Center everyday and applied to all possible investment banks. At first, I did not have much luck because I was not fully prepared. However, I took most of the interviews because I thought it would be good practice. Professor Joong-hyuk Kim’s finance management class and Professor Jin-Wan Cho’s futures option classes were helping in deciding my career path. Lastly, the exchange program at KUBS helped me to gain the confidence that I could go anywhere in the world and stand tall. These experiences were very helpful and possible because I chose KUBS.
- What does the internship mean for you?
For 10 weeks (mid June - late August) traveling between Hong Kong and Singapore, I will work in the research, sales, structuring and trading department and receive training relevant to each department (Investment valuation, financial modeling). Near the end of the internship we will be evaluated and interns with good results will be offered a full-time position. Although it is only for ten weeks, I believe that working at a global bank like Deutsche Bank in Hong Kong will greatly benefit my career as I move forward. My goal is to work hard as an intern and get a permanent job offer.
- What would you like to say to other students?
I would like to tell them have pride in being a member of KU. If you have pride in you school and confidence in whatever you do, I think you can become a competent person that will be welcomed anywhere. I don’t think you can gain that kind of confidence and passion on your own. It’s important to study with your friends through study groups and develop passion for your own life.
