2018 Korea-Yonsei University Championships ‘Ko-Yon Jeon’

‘2018 Korea-Yonsei University Championships (Ko-Yon Jeon)’ ended with the winning of Yonsei University. Korea University's final record is 1 wins 1 divided 3 losses. Last year, Korea University lost to Yonsei University for the first time in seven years. Despite the expectation to wipe out the disgrace of former defeat, Yonsei University again won the championships. Korea University's championship record so far is 18 wins, 20 losses and 10 ties.

In fact, for the first time since the commencement of Ko-Yon Jeon, the baseball game was canceled due to weather condition. Earlier on, its opening ceremony was delayed 40 minutes due to typhoon Kong-Rey. It was raining from the early morning and there were concerns that the condition would be worse. Unfortunately the weather condition deteriorated, resulting in the cancellation of the baseball game. Instead, Korea University baseball team performed a baseball slide for the audience who were looking forward to the game.

The basketball game was held in the afternoon, where Korea University defeated 69 to 72 in spite of KU’s winnings on earlier official annual matches. Throughout the four quarters, the two teams played a tight match. From the start of the first quarter, it was quite tense as four key players drew the foul. Nevertheless, the first quarter points were even, thanks to great plays by Jun-Young Park (PE ‘15) and Jeong-Hyun Park (PE ’16). Although freshmen players turned the game around in the second quarter, Yonsei University team again dominated the game in the third quarter with a three-pointer by Mu-Seong Kim. KU team deployed key players who are 3rd or 4th-year students to stabilize defense strategies accordingly. However, as Mu-Seong Kim again shot a three-pointer at the end of the fourth quarter, the game ended in a tie.

Ice hockey won a dramatic reversal of 2 to 1 after a close battle. Although KU ice hockey team played a series of attacks in the first period, Yonsei University team was not an easy opponent. At the start of the second period, the tension was increased by both teams's playing to score the first goal. Unfortunately, Yonsei University team was winning with the first goal by Ji-Hyun Cho. KU ice hockey team seemed to be losing, but KU goalkeeper Hyun-Seop Shim (PE’16) put up a good defense, preventing further lost point in the second period. At the end of the third quarter, KU team scored a goal by Jae-Hee Lee (PE’16). It was a turning point scored on a minute and 53 seconds before the end of the quarter. KU team scored another goal eight seconds before the whistle blow, bringing the winning after four years of defeat.

During the following rugby match, KU rugby team was not very lucky, making a knock on and lineouts. KU team lost the game with a score of 15 to 31. During the first half, Min-Ki Son (PE’16) made a successful penalty kick. Although KU team scored three points, Yonsei University made a big gap scoring 19 points. During the second half, Young-Hwan Kim from Yonsei University team succeeded try, followed by Hyun-Min Shin’s successful conversion kick. As Hyun-Soo Lee from Yonsei University team made another successful try, the opponent scored a total of 31 points. Even though players from KU team, Min-Ki Son (PE’16) and Kyung-Hwan Lee (PE‘15) performed outstanding plays of try, conversion kick (second half, 15 min) and another try at in-goal line (second half, 27 min), KU team was not able to catch up the opponent, resulting in the final score of 15:31.

The final game of the championship was a soccer match, where KU team suffered a reversal of winning with the final score of 1:2. During the first half, Jae-Won Shin (PE’17) made the first goal after a strong shooting. However, Tae-Woong Yoon from the opponent shot a tie goal in the second half, making it a tight match. After 20 minutes in the second half, players seemed exhausted. There were missed passes and the ball dominance switched frequently. After all, Yonsei University team’s aggressive attacks failed KU team’s defensive strategies. Seung-Woon Ha from Yonsei University scored another goal 24 minutes after the second half, bringing the winning of the opponent.

After the championships closed, one of the audience Min-Jung Kang (Business’14) commented that “No matter which university won the championship, it was a very inclusive festival that brought together students and alumni from both universities. Regardless of where you are from, I am sure that all of the participants were able to enjoy this big event thanks to the players who did their best in spite of the weather condition.”
