Spring 2018 Graduate School Meeting and Special Lecture on Research Integrity
On June 8th, KUBS held Spring 2018 Graduate School Meeting and Special Lecture on Research Integrity at Hyundai Motor Hall Room B307. The meeting was hosted by Associate Dean Jong-Ho Lee, program director of the department of business administration and department of international business. The research Integrity lecture was held by Professor Tae-Hoon Ha (Korea University School of Law).
Graduate school meeting was held for 30 minutes where graduate students had a chance to suggest improvements or make complaints. Associate Dean Jong-Ho Lee answered to each idea raised during the discussion. Some of the students’ ideas were a new copy machine, study carrels at the library. "If you would like to discuss any other things that you prefer to discuss in private, come to my office. I will be more than happy to discuss with you,” Associate Dean Jong-Ho Lee added.
In the afternoon from 4:30 pm, professor Tae-Hoon Ha held a lecture ‘Research Integrity for the next generation of the discipline’. The lecture mainly discussed △Definition of research misconduct △Rules of how to cite other’s work properly △Judicial precedents for plagiarism. Professor Ha explained, “From 2007 onwards, they perform a fact check on plagiarism in a thesis as senior government official’s qualification criteria. It highlighted the importance of the code of conduct for research integrity.” “I strongly suggest you be familiar with the rules of proper citation.”
Throughout his lecture, professor Tae-Hoon Ha emphasized the importance of proper citation in a thesis. As a consequence of the increased awareness, the rules are now strictly applied to academic works. Recently the Ministry of Education has revised ‘The Guidelines for Research Integrity’, plagiarism applies to written work that a student uses without citation. Professor Ha added, “Whenever you are in doubt, indicate its source - to be safe.” “Please note that even if you paraphrase or summarize, you must cite its source as well.”
