Professor Dong Wook Lee Wins Best Research Paper Award at Business Conference
Country-specific growth opportunities, within-country heterogeneity, and the role of financial globalization”
Analysis of over 50,000 firms across 40 countries

On August 19 (Fri), Professor Dong Wook Lee and Ph.D. student Lingxia Sun won Best Research Paper Award at a business conference hosted by Korean Academic Society of Business Administration and Maekyung Media Group. The title of the awarded paper is “Country-specific growth opportunities, within-country heterogeneity, and the role of financial globalization.”

“As a country becomes more financially open, the difference in country-specific growth opportunities (CSGOs) between small and large firms shrinks,” Professor Lee said.

“We analyzed that a firm’s growth opportunities are influenced by regulatory environment in a country. The CSGOs are more prominent in small companies,” he added.

According to the study conducted by Professor Dong Wook Lee, over 50,000 companies across 40 countries showed that small firms in a country have greater country-specific components in their growth options compared to large firms in the same country. He also explained that the weaker CSGOs associated with financial openness are more pronounced in small firms of the financially open countries and that the gap in CSGOs between small and large firms is narrower in those countries.
