KUBS students are successfully finding employment with global companies, thanks to the foreign language skills, international network and global mind-set acquired through either the student exchange program or the internship programs. Ho-young Jung (Business Administration 04) received a full?time offer from Deutsche Bank, the global investment bank, after finishing his internship. He told us his success story.

- Tell us a little about Deutsche Bank.

Deutsche Bank was founded in Germany in 1870 as a commercial bank and today is one of the world’s greatest investment banks. A global company, Deutsche Bank has 80,000 employees in 76 countries and has been growing 20% annually since expanding its investment bank business in 1995.

The global headquarters is located in London and the Asia-Pacific headquarters are located in Singapore. In 2008 when the global financial crisis was at its peak, Deutsche Bank was selected Best Bank of 2008 by Finance Asia, thanks to its successful risk management.

- Can you explain the hiring process?
I had always wanted to work at an investment bank and had been preparing myself. I saw a notice posted by the KUBS International Office last October. It was about a Summer Analyst Program that Deutsche Bank Asia was running and they were looking for Korean undergraduate students. So I applied to the program and was selected as an intern after taking one written exam and three interviews.

From mid-June to late-August, I worked as an intern with 21 other interns from around the world. We spent five weeks in Hong Kong (Prime Brokerage Sales) and five weeks in Singapore (Credit Trading). I was assigned to a total of three projects during my internship. Besides carrying out my tasks as an intern, I took part in a forex trading simulation and finished my internship with a presentation on how I was able to generate profit and what sort of investment strategy I used.

I was evaluated three times; two evaluations by two different departments and one evaluation on my final forex trading presentation. The evaluation results were positive and I received a full-time offer.

-What aspects of KUBS were helpful when you were living abroad and finding employment?

I think communication skills and interpersonal skills are the two most important factors when working abroad.

Communication skills can be divided into two aspects; the language itself and delivery. By language here I mean, business English. Through the exchange student program offered by KUBS, I was able to enhance my business English proficiency while studying in the US. After returning home, I was able to maintain my English skills by taking various courses in English. Furthermore, I was able to develop the ability to deliver my message effectively through many presentation assignments.

Interpersonal skills can be developed through the numerous team assignments at KUBS and the team discussions that are held to prepare for the weekly seminars at academic clubs like FES. From my freshman years, I recognized that people do not think alike and thought hard about how to reconcile and find an agreement between team members. Through these thoughts, I learned how to treat people with different personalities.

-  Please share with us your future plans.

I will officially join the company next July when I begin a six-week training program in London with 100 colleagues from around the world. My short term goal is to receive good grades during the training period and get assigned to the department of my choice with very favorable conditions.

In the longer term, I would like to fully take advantage of working at a global IB firm and develop into a key talent of the Asian financial sector in Hong Kong, the hub of Asian finance.

- Do you have any advice for other KUBS students?

I think there are three things you need in order to successfully realize your goals; capability, opportunity, and passion. I think the most important thing here is passion. A person who is passionate about his dreams will make the effort to develop his capabilities and will search high and low for opportunities. However, I think it is very difficult to light up your passion on your own. Therefore, I would like to tell other students to meet different people from diverse fields. Rather than blindly studying for a license or certain certificate, I think it is more rewarding to discover areas that you are passionate about while taking into consideration the experiences of your seniors.
