Interview with New KUBS Dean Soo Young Kwon
“Educational Innovation for Integrated Intellectuals”

Professor Soo Young Kwon has been elected as the 23rd Dean of Korea University Business School (KUBS). “Under the unanimous goal of all KUBS members, we will make KUBS a competitive university,” said Dean Kwon whose term of office began on November 1. The met Dean Kwon who will lead KUBS for the next two years to talk about the vision of KUBS.

Q. Congratulations on your recent appointment as the 23rd Dean of Korea University Business School (KUBS).
I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as Dean of KUBS, which is the first and the best business school in Korea. As I look back on the accomplishments that former deans have made, I feel heavy responsibilities. I will dedicate myself to developing KUBS for the next two years.

Q. As leader of KUBS for two years, what is your plan and vision?
As new Dean, I have two primary plans in my mind. Firstly, I would like to continue the various projects that former deans have been working on. The projects developed at KUBS are our assets filled with valuable time and efforts. Thus, I will strive to run these projects smoothly and produce the best possible outcome.

Particularly, I will provide full support to “KUBS Startup Institute,” which was launched in September as a platform for nurturing entrepreneurs, in order to develop as the center of startup incubation and network. I strongly believe KUBS Startup Institute being the integrated startup education center will take over a pioneering role. Moreover, I am planning to expand a living expense scholarship called “KUBS Dream Scholarship” so that KUBS students can more focus on their studies. I will not let our students give up on their dreams due to financial hardships.

My second plan is the Reorganization of Curriculum. I plan to introduce “Blended Learning” in each area. My goal is to encourage two-way communication between students and professors by combining online and offline courses. When a self-learning environment is formed through e-learning, professors can teach students in a more innovative and interactive way. This will allow education provided by KUBS to be recognized as its unique brand. Students entering into society will also have distinguished strengths as well.

As part of the Reorganization of Curriculum, KUBS plans to offer courses that develop creativity. In today’s era, the blend of liberal arts and natural sciences forms creative innovation. Through new education, we must not only enhance intelligence, but also enhance extelligence, which connects existing ideas around the world. Creativity is not making something out of nothing. Rather, it is a networking ability that makes new things by connecting existing knowledge. Producing “integrated intellects,” who understand a variety of studies including technology, coincides with the educational goal of KUBS. Thus, I will strive to provide educational environment that allows students to prosper the power of thought.

Q. What is your opinion about KUBS’ position, reputation, and competitiveness in Korea and the world?
KUBS is, of course, the best business school in Korea. Our school is the only business school that has ranked in the top 100 in various worldwide rankings and that has become a member of the CEMS Global Alliance, a global business school alliance where only the single best school per nation can join.

However, KUBS has not yet achieved distinguished performance compared to other universities in Asia. When comparing to the prestigious universities, such as Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), National University of Singapore (NUS), and University of New South Wales (UNSW), we still have a long way to go. In addition, Chinese universities including Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Fudan University, are growing leaps and bounds.

Delivering an excellent academic performance is essential, but now it is time to think about a way to nurture specialized intellectuals through business education in the undergraduate program. As we produce intellectuals who contribute to our society living up to its reputation and expectation, KUBS will be cemented as a university receiving superb reviews in both research and education.

Q. In terms of the development of KUBS, there has been an immense amount of support by alumni. Do you have any words for them?
KUBS alumni’s love for their alma mater is extremely significant. We were able to build world-class educational facilities thanks to many of our alumni, and I always convey my deepest gratitude to them. I believe we must now concentrate on producing global leaders within the KUBS community. With support, scholarships, research funds provided by the alumni, we will always do our absolute best to pursue a big dream.

Q. Lastly, would you like to give any message to all KUBS members?
Over the past ten years, KUBS which has continuously sought innovation and development is facing a greater goal. The vision of KUBS is “World-class Knowledge Hub in Business,” indicating that KUBS will become a global hub leading business knowledge. Specifically, we aim to become Asia No. 1 and global top 30 by 2030. With that being said, KUBS will continue to secure distinguished faculty and develop specialized strategies by major area.

I have no doubt KUBS has the capacity to realize the vision we have set. However, the ideas and plans that KUBS members do not fully agree can never succeed. In order to accomplish the mission of KUBS and realize its vision, active interest and cooperation from students, faculty, staff, and alumni are surely required. As the Dean of KUBS, I will strive to bring the community together.
