I finished the summer internship program in Iljin Global last week. And I want to share you my experience there
Firstly, I’m going to introduce you Iljin Group briefly. Iljin was established as a forging operation in 1978 and subsequently entered the automobile wheel bearing market in 1994, after expanding its business to include container and automobile chassis components. Now iljin is a global wheel bearing expert company that has supply agreements with a number of motor companies worldwide. Iljin launched China market in 2002, building wheel bearing and chassis components manufacturing factory in Beijing. In 2006, Iljin built another factory in Tianjin, a city very near Beijing, which major in bearing manufacturing and forging. The main difference between Iljin Beijing and Iljin Tianjin is that the former one offer all the wheel bearings, it produced, to Hyundai Motor, while the latter one focuses on customers other than Hyundai Motor, like BMW, Shanghai GM, Cherry and so on. Besides, Iljin has two sales offices in Beijing and Shanghai. Both of them are aim at customers other than Hyundai Motor. In other words, Iljin has already developed a quite mature cooperation relationship with Hyundai and now it’s trying to attract other foreign customers.
According to the internship schedule, I worked in Iljin Beijing for two weeks and went to Iljin Tianjin for another two weeks. However, different from other internships, I was not assigned to a specific position and really “work” there. Instead, I was transferred among different departments and listened to lectures given by managers in every section about the function and operation systems in the specific department. The reason is, as explained by the company, you can not really learn something in one month, and for business students, being familiar with every different section may do more help to future career.
As for the advantages of this internship, Iljin treated us really good. They offered almost every thing in daily life, wonderful accommodation, meals, and even assigned a car to take us travel in Beijing in weekend. Sometimes, I feel like it’s a vacation rather than an internship. Also, as I described above, this internship gave me opportunity to learn the whole picture of a company. I think it’s helpful for business students. Moreover, I get to know about how an expatriate staff’s life is and how they think of China. It’s really funny that I find most short lived expatriate staff complained a lot about life in China while long lived ones enjoyed their life here.
As for disadvantages, on other two Korean students’ who I worked with in Iljin side, this experience really could be not counted as an international internship. We listened to lectures given by Korean expatriate staffs, spoke in Korean, and even ate Korean food every day. All the people surrounding us were Korean. To tell the truth, we really did not have chance to talk with Chinese people or know about China. However, since I’m a Chinese, it’s not a big problem for me. I just simply assumed that it’s an internship experience in Korea. But I think the other two Korean students are not so satisfied with this kind of situation. Meanwhile, the location of the company is not so good. It’s true that the company locates in Beijing, but it’s actually an industry zone in the suburb of Beijing, with no high buildings, no department stores. It takes more than one hour by a car to go to the downtown of Beijing. So don’t account that you can take a walk in Beijing city after work. There’s only farmland around Iljin.
The biggest problem is the internship schedule was not compact at all. Usually, we spent hours in the studying room surfing Internet, waiting for the expatriate staffs have time to give a lecture. As scheduled, every expatriate staff should give a lecture for four hours, but usually, they finished in 30 minutes. So we have to kill the remaining time in the studying room again. One of the Korean students I worked with even wanted to quit this internship in the first week, because she thought it’s really a waste of time.
Anyway, for students who have real interest in automotive industry and want to learn something technological, then Iljin is a good choice for you. Since almost all expatriate staffs there are graduated from engineering major, they can teach you professional knowledge in this area. However, if what you are looking for is experience business environment in China and improve Chinese language skill, please think twice before apply for Iljin.
