KUBS Dean's Message
Greetings. My name is Soo Young Kwon and I am the Dean of Korea University Business School.
The Hwangseong Sinmun, one of the Korea’s earliest Korean-language daily newspapers, officially released the article on February 22, 1905, announcing the establishment of Bosung College, stating—“The nation’s first modern institution of higher education called Bosung College will be inaugurated.” Emperor Gojong of the Korean Empire bestowed the name of the school “Bosung (普成)” which implies “the full development and realization of humanity.” This also corresponds to Yong Ik Lee’s belief “National Salvation through Education (敎育救國).” Bosung College, the predecessor of Korea University, was founded in 1905 with its first two departments, the Department of Plutology and the Department of Law. The Department of Plutology eventually became today’s Korea University Business School and later introduced business education for the first time in Korea.
Korea University Business School (KUBS) is the one and only college that shares a 111-year history alongside Korea University. The 111-year history of KUBS is the “legacy of innovation.” In 1937, KUBS offered the first “Business Economics” course in Korea and adopted the name “Department of Business Administration” in 1955. The college is a pioneer that established the nation’s first professional business school and introduced modern western business education. Not only that, KUBS set a major precedent in the history of university architecture through the construction of world-class college infrastructures including △KUBS Main Building, △LG-POSCO Building, and △Hyundai Motor Hall.
KUBS is now becoming a globally competitive business school beyond its reputation as the representative business education institution in Korea. KUBS was the first in the nation to earn AACSB accreditation from the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and EQUIS (EFMD Quality Improvement System) accreditation from the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) in 2005 and 2007, respectively. In addition, KUBS was the first domestic business school to earn its first five-year reaccreditation for both AACSB and EQUIS in 2010 and succeeded in renewing its second five-year re-accreditation in 2015 as well.
Furthermore, KUBS reaffirmed its world-class standing by becoming a full academic member of the CEMS Global Alliance—an exclusive group of academic and corporate members where only the single best business school per nation is granted membership. △The London School of Economics and Political Science in the United Kingdom, △Tsinghua University in China, △Keio University in Japan, and △National University of Singapore in Singapore, and other notable universities worldwide are part of the alliance.
In October 2016, KUBS has recently ranked 76th worldwide in the Business and Economics league table of the “THE World University Rankings 2016-2017 by Subject,” released by UK’s Times Higher Education (THE). Also, the college ranked first place in Korea by exclusively having been listed in the top 100.
The KUBS Vision is “World-class Knowledge Hub in Business,” aiming that KUBS will stand as a global hub leading business knowledge. Under this vision, the college sets a specific goal of becoming Asia No. 1 and global top 30. KUBS will continue to accomplish a variety of tasks such as recruiting distinguished faculty, developing specialized strategies by major area, providing a balanced support system for research and lectures, and advancing the education system of undergraduate and graduate schools.
KUBS has been pursuing innovation and transition since its foundation. Also, the college has affirmed its potential by making the impossible possible. With that being said, I strongly believe that KUBS has full capacity to realize its vision. To accomplish the mission and realize the vision of KUBS, I will strive to actively unite students, faculty, and staff into one.
I would like to convey my deepest gratitude to those for the unconditional love and support for KUBS throughout the past 111 years. Under the goal of becoming the “Asia No. 1, Global Top 30,” I kindly ask for your continued interest and support as KUBS transitions in opening a new chapter.
Soo Young Kwon
Dean, Korea University Business School
